El Niño reconfigures global weather systems by disrupting the Pacific Walker Circulation and altering the trajectory of the mid-latitude and subtropical jet streams.
The Subtropical Jet Stream Extension
Under El Niño conditions, anomalous tropical ocean warmth intensifies the Hadley Circulation. This accelerates upper-level winds and stretches the subtropical jet stream eastward across the eastern Pacific and the southern United States. The strengthened jet acts as an atmospheric storm conveyor, steering persistent low-pressure systems across California, northern Mexico, the Gulf Coast, and Florida.
Impact on Tropical Cyclones (Hurricanes and Typhoons)
El Niño creates sharply contrasting conditions across the world's major tropical cyclone basins:
- Atlantic Basin (Suppression): Strong upper-level westerly winds over the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic create high vertical wind shear. This tears apart developing tropical disturbances, generally reducing Atlantic hurricane frequency and intensity.
- Eastern & Central Pacific (Enhancement): Abnormally warm ocean waters and reduced vertical wind shear create ideal conditions for explosive tropical cyclone formation and long-lived hurricanes off the coast of Mexico and Hawaii.
- Western North Pacific: The average location of typhoon genesis shifts eastward toward the International Date Line, resulting in longer sea tracks and a higher proportion of recurving super typhoons affecting Japan.
Monsoon Disruption Across Continents
The South Asian, East Asian, and Australian monsoons depend on seasonal land-sea thermal contrasts and ascending air masses over the Indo-Pacific warm pool. When ascending motion shifts toward the central Pacific during El Niño, subsiding air is induced over the Indian subcontinent and Maritime Continent. This suppresses convective cloud formation, frequently weakening the Indian Southwest Monsoon and delaying monsoon onset across Indonesia and northern Australia.
